The next afternoon, we are on our way to the Seagram Building, and Hoyeon, recharged from an early lunch at Locanda Verde, is practicing her presentation for the CFDA Award for American emerging designer of the year. Hunched over a piece of loose leaf, she writes down the correct pronunciation of each designer’s name in tiny immaculate script. “You know in Hollywood the media never pronounce my name right?” she says, playfully. (Too often they change the soft “yuhn” for an awkward “yoon.”)

We arrive, circling the building for the correct entrance, and Hoyeon squeezes my shoulders, singing my name, “Mon-i-ca,” …….

There’s a lot of energy and excitement surrounding summer 2021. Even if you’re being cautiously optimistic, you can sense that it’s going to be a completely different summer than last year and hopefully a lot more fun and carefree. We deserve a little bit of levity, right?

A couple weeks ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom showed off a new haircut and announced — much to the delight of shaggy Californians — that salons in many counties could reopen.

From the early days of the state’s shutdown, health officials made clear the particular risks in salons and barber shops, where services require close personal contact and take place indoors. Nail salons fell under that category.

Cognac wool co-ords, long camel coats and burgundy velvet – when we’re anticipating autumn, so many colours and textures come to mind. With nails, it’s always pretty formulaic; anything berry works, as do neutrals and caramel nails, and even pumpkin orange for the more adventurous. But we never think of bringing our spring and summertime pastel shades into the cooler season, which makes sense for some (neon yellow screams ‘poolside’) but not for the rest. Enter mint green: a versatile enough shade to carry into the cooler months (that actually works beautifully in winter, too) that suits absolutely everyone.
